Fortune Cookies

I found a cute pattern at Everyday Cricut to cut circles with the Cricut machine and fold them into fortune cookies. I was going to make them for Valentine's Day but the color of the paper did not look right. So I added tags for our Breast Cancer Survivors group and gave the fortune cookies to them instead.

The fortune cookies turned out cute and were really easy to make. They would make cute table decorations for a party or luncheon.

I made several of these ornaments for Christmas gifts this year. They are quite challenging to make and my kids learned a few new swear words while I was working on them. :)

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is over but I just finished this pair of three-dimensional pilgrims. They are headed to Florida as a special gift for a quilling swap I participated in. I hope they enjoy their trip!

When Sandy mentioned an international quilling blog hop I was excited to participate. Fall is my favorite time of year with the cooler weather and the beautiful leaves. As a family, we spend more time outside playing in the park, riding bikes or flying kites. My kids love jumping in the big leaf piles in our yard, picking pumpkins and sometimes apples. There are also a lot of birds that migrate though our area, like geese, ducks and pelicans which is always fun to see. The butterflies are out and I love seeing woolly bear caterpillars in the fall, though there are not that many in South Dakota.

My quilling piece is inspired by the things our family enjoys on a beautiful fall day.

Pumpkins and ghosts

Here is another Halloween project I recently made. The figure was supposed to be a ghost but he turned out too short and fat. Then, when I added a face and he looked more like Mr. Potato Head dressed as a ghost. Instead of starting over, I added a hat, glasses and a mustache to complete the Potato Head look.

Not one of my best invention, but it is pretty funny looking. The pumpkins are two small bowl shapes attached at the middle in various sizes. The man is about 2" high and the pumpkins are about 1" high and 3" long.

Bras for a Cause 2011

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Last year I made a quilled bra for the Bras for a Cause event. This year I am supporting the cause again with another bra called "Star Spangled Hooters". This one is made from an owl punch from Stampin' Up with quilled wings. The bra will be displayed around our community in October, then auctioned off at the end of the month. I will let you know how it turns out.

Fall Pendant

I had so much fun trying the necklace kits from Quilled Creations, I decided to try one of my own designs for fall. I really like adding a square of paper behind the quilled piece. It adds more color and makes the design stand out. Using a 1" square paper punch makes it easy to get the perfect fit for the pendant blank. I am hoping to try a few other fall pendant designs in the next few weeks.

Getting ready for Halloween

Hi friends- I'm sorry it has been so long since I posted something new. We had a very busy summer and time just got away from me. Now that my kids have started school and we are in more of a routine, I have had some time to make a few quilling projects.

These Halloween house are made from scrapbook paper and orange vellum over the windows. I saw the pattern in the current issue of Scrapbooks Etc. I added quilled ghosts, a cat and bat, to the inside of the house to create shadows.

Inside the house is a small, battery operated, tea light. It makes just enough light to make the windows glow. I also made some Halloween cupcakes and a fall necklace that I will show you in the next few weeks.

Flowers

I have not done much quilling in the past month, but I was looking through my old photos and found a cute vase of flowers I did several years ago. It is part of a sign I made for a booth I had at our local historical society.

These were some plastic picture frames I decorated many years ago. It is interesting to look back and see how your skills and interests have changed.

I recently made a card for another swap using a piece of vellum that had a printed bird and bird house on it. I taped it behind the window of the card, added a quilled bird and decorations around the corners. The blue and red colors work really well together.

I am a member of the North American Quilling Guild yahoo discussion group. For the past two months members of the group have been participating in quilling swaps. It is a great way to create something new and share the joy of quilling with others. If you have a chance to participate in a swap, give it a try, it is a great way to meet other quillers.

Last month we made a piece of quilling on a 4"x4" square card.

50th birthday card

A friend asked if I could make a funny card for a 50th birthday party. The theme was "Name is turning 50, lets give her some support". They were even having a bra birthday cake! This is the card I came up with.

Well, the school year is almost over. It is hard to believe it is almost summer vacation. I like to make a small gift for my children's teachers each year. This year I took a Kaiser Craft note holder, painted them different colors, applied some school theme scrapbook paper and added a quilled apple and a girl. They turned out pretty cute.

I have really enjoyed making necklace pendants from the new jewelry kits by Quilled Creations. The kits come with all of the supplies and instructions and are really quick and easy to do. Since trying the kits, I have purchased extra pendant blanks to make my own designs. They really catch people's attention. I made two for a volunteer appreciation luncheon, and have since received three separate requests for a necklace, and our local hospital gift shop placed an order for twenty. It is a good thing they are easy to make! Below are some of the designs I used for the gift shop order.

Friendship frame

I have always liked the products from Kaiser Craft, especially their home decor items to decorate and embellish. I have been waiting for the right event so I could decorate one of the frames. Instead of putting pictures in the spaces, I added neat vintage papers, butterfly embellishments, punched flowers and some quilling. The frame was for a friend that was retiring so in the empty squares, I had employees and volunteers write a message and sign their names. It turned out to be a beautiful keepsake with a lot of memories.

This is the frame with the different types of vintage looking papers and some of the embellishments. The squares without embellishments are where the staff and volunteers signed their names.

New to the zoo crew

The past few weeks have flown by and I've been busy making little animals for a co-worker's grandchildren. She wants to put them inside plastic Easter eggs for treats which is a clever idea.

I made a zebra, rhino and unicorn which I have shown here before. I also made two horses (I'm guessing the boys don't want unicorns). They turned out well.

I have also been trying the new kits from Quilled Creations- mini cupcakes and necklaces. Both are great fun and quite easy to do. If you haven't tried three-dimensional quilling before, I would recommend the cupcake kit and the moulding tool.

Unicorns

Well, after four beautiful days with enough sunshine to melt all of our snow, we had a blizzard and got it all back in one day. Needless to say we were wishing we were some place warner. That got me to thinking about the fairy books my kids read and how nice and sunny fairyland is all the time, which gave me the idea of making unicorns. They turned out cute and look nice next to the fairy houses my kids decorated last summer.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's day. I have been busy making these little Valentine's ornaments. These flowers are quite popular embellishments on cards and scrapbook pages these days. I added ribbon to the back to make them into ornaments. You could add them to cards or put a magnet on the back.

Here is how I made them.

I cut strips from a variety of colored papers. They are 4" long x 1" wide. The longer the strips, the wider the paper has to be so it can fold into a half circle. Then I accordion folded the papers and glued the ends of two strips together to make a ring.

Let the ring dry for a few minutes so the ends do not slide. Then press down on the inner edge of the paper until all of points meet in the middle. Have a 1.5" circle of paper ready to so you can glue the flower to it. You will have to hold it together until you can glue it to the circle or it will pop open.

I added a quilled heart to the center. Then glued a ribbon on the back with a gift tag that was stamped with a Valentine's day stamp.

You could add lace, buttons, stickers, or whatever embellishments you have to the center. You could also change the color of the paper and do a green St. Patrick's theme; or pink and blue for baby shower; or yellow and orange for spring flowers etc. There are a lot of possibilities.

New look and a new card

It has been so cold and snowy here this winter that it is hard to feel motivated to do any quilling. So I took some time to update the look of my blog with a new banner and some brighter colors. I am hoping this will help me stay motivated to keep working on new quilling projects.

I would like to send a big thank you to Kristen at The Girl Makes Banners on www.etsy.com. She created my new blog banner. If you ever need some computer graphics work done for your blog or website, I would highly recommend her.

Now on to a little project. Since Valentine's Day is almost here, I put together this little gift card. It is small and quite easy to make. The directions are listed below. Enjoy!

Materials: 1/8" paper in red, pink or purple

Instructions:

• Make 2 loose coils from 6" long pieces of red. Pinch into tear drop shape. Glue the sides of the pointed ends together.

• The little card is made from a 4" wide x 2" tall piece of patterned paper folded in half. Then add the hearts to the card as shown. Another option would be to make one large heart from 18" of paper and center it on the card.

Right now I am working on a bunch of Valentine's ornaments for a volunteer luncheon. I will post photos when I am finished.

Wall plaque

A few years ago my parents built a new house and as a house warming gift, I made a welcome plaque with quilled flowers. I purchased a wood plaque at Wal-Mart and painted it white, then covered the paint with a sealer to make it glossy. After centering the lettering, I added the flowers along the top and bottom. It looks nice and my parents get a lot of compliments on it. But looking at it now, several years later, I think I should have added more flowers to give it more color. It is about 12" long x 8" high.

Froggy Mom

Well, my first project for this year is sure an unusual one. My coworker and her two friends are busy, working moms, with young kids. They made a deal to go out together once in awhile and have some fun. So in honor of their group, and as a reminder that they all need to take a break once in awhile, she asked if I could make a three-dimensional, exhausted, overworked, mom frog and all of the things she has to take care of.

I must admit it took me by surprise and I spent a great deal of time coming up with an idea. Though being trapped inside for three days by a blizzard sure gave me enough time to work on it. This is what I ended up with. My coworker and her friends enjoyed the results.

The mom frog with curlers in her hair and a cup of coffee, dirty dishes, to do list, crying baby frog, pile of diapers, two kids fighting over a toy, clogged toilet, school homework, and dirty dishes

(with little flies on the plates).

The whole display is 5" x 5" glued to a piece of foam board. I used mostly 1/4" and 1/8" quilling paper, then covered everything with Modge Podge glue so it would not get damaged or dirty from handling.

(yes, there is something in the toilet besides toilet paper.)

Quilled Policemen

I had a fun day today. I work for a non-profit organization that operates a thrift store. It is staffed by a few paid employees but the majority of the work is done by a large group of very dedicated volunteers. The proceeds from the store go toward programs, support groups and financial assistance for cancer and hospice patients in our community.

Several months ago, the thrift store was broken into and the thieves stole several days worth of profits. The event not only affected the programs we sponsor but also greatly upset our volunteers who work so hard to keep things running.

Luckily the police were able to quickly catch the thieves and they are now in prison. To thank the officers for their hard work, they were invited to our Christmas volunteer appreciation luncheon. Nine officers and two dispatchers were able to come. They received a lot of praise from close to 100 volunteers. I was asked to quill something for the police officers as a thank you gift and came up with the following policemen. They were thrilled with their gift and I was excited to be able to make something unique to honor what they do for our community.

Breast Cancer Awareness Thank You Card

In October, I participated in a Bras for a Cause event with a bra decorated in quilling. I had several relatives and friends that contributed money to support my bra in the competition so as a thank you I made these cards for them.

Another holiday is almost upon us. These past few months sure have seemed to fly by. I have not had time to make Thanksgiving cards this year but here is one I made several years ago.

The following turkey pattern is one that I designed for the

2007 Quilling Design-a-Day calendar by Accord.

1 loose coil made from 12" of brown for the body
1 loose coil made from 6" of brown for the head
9 teardrop shapes made from 3" of various colors (red, yellow, orange, green) for the tail feathers
1 strip of orange 1/2" long folded in half and trimmed to a point for the beak
1 strip of red 1/2" long folded in half and rounded on the end for the waddle
1 strip of orange 1.5" long, fold in half, then accordion fold each end to make three toes at the end of each leg.
2 wiggle eyes

Arrange as shown.

Support The Girls Update

Here is an update for those of you who read my post at the beginning of the month about "The Girls Gone Wild" bra I decorated with quilling for an American Cancer Society fundraiser.

I received three ribbons for my work, a beautiful handmade copper ribbon pin and necklace. One lucky bidder won my bra and our local American Cancer Society raised a lot of money for Breast Cancer Awareness. So it was a win, win, win situation and a lot of fun for everyone involved. Thank you to all of you who posted comments, voted, and showed their support for this cause.

Halloween Ghost

It has been a beautiful fall here in South Dakota, USA. The weather has been in the 60s making it hard to believe winter is right around the corner. In keeping with the Halloween theme, I have a pattern for a little ghost that could be added to a card, gift tag or Halloween treat bag.

Materials: 1/8" white paper, wiggly eyes

Instructions:

• Body- make one loose coil from 24" of white paper. Glue loose coil into an off-centered circle, then lightly squeeze the sides to from an oval. Holding the oval at the top, use your fingers or a tweezers to pinch several points along the bottom making the crimped edge.

• Arms- make two teardrops from 4" of white paper. Glue one teardrop to each side of the body. Glue wiggly to the body as shown.

Almost Halloween

My kids are excited because Halloween trick or treat is rapidly approaching. They had their costumes picked out since August and are already to go. Here are a few Halloween quilling treats.

This is a 3x5" frame with a ghost, pumpkins and Halloween ribbon.

This is an 8x12"shadowbox frame. The tree and house are cut out of black scrapbook paper. The three figures on the bottom are three dimensional, the others are flat quilling.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and to help the cause I decorated a bra for a local Bras for a Cause fundraising event. Here is the result. Can you believe that mine is the only one with monkeys on it? The title is "The Girls Gone Wild". And yes you can glue paper quilling to just about anything. Fall Decorations

Now that the weather is turning cooler and the leaves are starting to change colors, it is time to start thinking about fall decorations. Here are a few fall quilling items to spark your creativity.

This small paper mache box was painted brown and decorated with quilled pumpkins and punched leaves.

A larger version of the box with a scarecrow. The scarecrow was a decorative plant stake with the wire stake removed.

Fall still-life with made with outline stickers, colored gel pens and fringed flowers glued to a small 3x5" canvas.

Like most places, South Dakota has been really hot this summer. Last week it was 100 degrees all week (111 on Monday, Yikes!). I have not done much quilling, it just seems to hot to do anything. I finally got around to finishing a 3-d animal I started a few weeks ago. Here is the result. I think he is pretty cute. He is the same size as the zebra and giraffe I did awhile ago.

Three-dimensional People

One of my favorite things to do with quilling is to make three-dimensional people. I like to add lot of little details and give them each their own personality. I've posted some of my people, the beach scenes and the garden girl, so here are some more that I have created in the past several years.

This was the first hunter I made as a Christmas ornament.

This is the second one with a little more detail and character.

These were made for my daughter's kindergarten teachers. I like to use small wooden balls for the heads because they are smoother than rolling paper ones. I also do not make faces any more since they don't usually turn out well.

This Christmas scene was made several years ago and still one of my favorites.

Monogram cards

Decorating a card with the recipient's initials is a great way to make hand-made cards even more special. You can make them simple or extra fancy depending on the individual, or use a theme to coordinate a set of cards. Or why not make a paper box to hold the set of cards. (I received the purple and yellow cards as part of a quilling swap).

Ball

1 black, off center, loose coil (20”, 50.8 cm)

Pins

2 white, loose coils (21”, 53.3 cm), pinch the coil above the center to make a large circle on the bottom and a smaller oval at the top, to make a pin shape.

2 red pieces (1/2”, 1.3 cm), wrap the red paper around the narrow portion of the white pin.

Glue pins and ball together as shown.

4th of July

Happy 4th of July! Quilling makes a great decoration for any holiday and is very versatile.

Here are two items I made for the 4th of July.

I glue a red ribbon around the outside of the votive candle holder,

then glued the flower to the ribbon.

The flower is made from 1/4" paper.

This is made from 1/8" paper shaped into marquis and triangle shapes.

There are strips of magnets glued to the back.

Sweet pea

Sweet Pea

This sweet pea pod and flower were made to decorate a baby scrapbook page. It could also be used for a summer or gardening page, card or gift tag.

Materials: 1/8” light green paper, green paper, yellow paper, ?” white paper, scissors or fringer

Instructions:

• Pea Pod- Make three tight circles using 18” of 1/8” light green paper for each circle. Glue them together in a row.

• Use four pieces of 4” green paper, stack the papers on top of each other and glue the tips of one end together. Wrap the four papers around the row of peas making an oval and glue the tips together to make a short stem.

• Leaves- using 4” green paper, make a loose circle, pinch into a marquis shape and slightly curve the tips. Make two leaves and glue them to either side of the pea pod stem.

• Take 2” long green paper, fold in half and curl each end down to make a “v” shape. Glue to the pea pod with the curls touching the leaves.

• Flower- fringe 6” of white paper. Glue a 4” piece of yellow 1/8” paper to one end and start rolling with the yellow strip. Spread out the white fringe.

• Make extra green vines by using 1-2” of green paper, curling one end and place around the flower or pod to fill in space as show.

My youngest is turning 4 in two weeks. Time sure does fly by. Here is a birthday cupcake to help celebrate.

Materials: 1/8" paper in yellow, brown, red
Instructions:
• Make 5 loose coils from 8" long pieces of yellow, shape into triangles.
• Alternate the triangles, three pointing down and two pointing up. Glue together, then take a piece of yellow paper and glue around the outside of all the triangles to hold everything together.
• Make 5 c-scrolls from 2" long pieces of brown. Layer on top of the yellow cake.
• Make one loose circle from 6" red. Glue the end farther back so there is a bit of the end sticking up for the stem (see photo).

Flower basket

With all of the rain we have had in the past week, our flowers (and weeds) are growing fast. Here is a little pattern for a flower basket card.

Flower basket

Materials: 1/8" and 1/4" purple, green, yellow paper

Instructions:

• Fringed flowers- use 1/4" paper and fringe either with a scissors or a fringer (this makes small cuts along one edge of the paper so that when it is rolled the paper will flare out). Make four flowers.

• Flowers- make six marquee shapes from 6" of 1/8" purple paper. Make one tight circle from 4" yellow paper. Arrange the purple marquee shapes around the yellow center.

• Leaves and stems- take 3" of green paper and roll one tip into a small circle. Make several open coils from 2" green paper and glue to to either side of the stem. (I made circles but you can pinch one end and make teardrop shapes to make more of a pointed leaf shape). Make four stems with leaves.

• There are little bits of curly green paper under the flowers. Take 1" of green, cut one end into point and lightly curl.

• Basket-use 1/8" yellow paper, cut six pieces 8" long each and lay them horizontally on your workspace. Cut six 8" pieces and weave them through the horizontal pieces. Start in the middle and go over, under, over until you reach the end. Then weave one strip next to the middle and alternate the pattern going under, over, under. Repeat with each strip. I took long strips of yellow and placed them over the woven piece at an angle, a smaller piece across the bottom and one across the top to outline the basket shape. Glue the strips to the woven piece, then cut the ends of the woven piece that stick out to make all of the sides even with the over layed piece.

• Glue the basket to your paper or card, then arrange the flowers and leaves.

You can make the basket larger or smaller by changing the number of strips. You can also change the colors of the flowers for different occasions.

Another lucky day for my quilling pieces. I won a second place ribbon for quilling and beyond and an honorable mention for free standing quilling at the North American Quilling Guild's 2010 conference in Long Island. I am very honored to be a part of the competition with so many talented quillers.

Teacher Appreciation

This week is teacher appreciation week. It is a great time to thank teachers for all their hard work. Why not create a special card or gift for them using quilling designs. Below are two simple patterns for school supplies to help you get started.

Paints and brush

Materials: 1/8" variety of colors for paints, black, light brown quilling paper

Instructions:

Create six loose coils out of 3" of assorted colors for the paints, glue the circles together to make three rows of two paints.
Use a 2.5" piece of black to glue around the outside edge of all of the paints to form a tray.
Make one marquise strip from 8" of light brown, squeeze tightly to make along oval shape for the brush handle.
Fold one strip of 1" black accordion style for the bristles and glue to the end of the brush.

Glue and Scissors

Materials: 1/8" white, orange, gray quilling paper

Glue Bottle Instructions:

Make 1 long rectangle from 8" white paper for the bottle.
Make 1 loose coil of orange and flatten one side for the cap of the glue bottle.
Make 1 teardrop from 2" orange paper for the tip of the cap, glue all of the pieces together as shown.

Scissors:

Make 2 half circles with 8" gray paper each
Make 2 loose coils with 4" gray paper each
Glue the two circles together, then glue the half circles below it with the flat sides facing in as shown.

Local Art Competition

I am happy to report that my three-dimensional piece "In My Garden" won first prize at our local art show this weekend. It generated a lot of positive comments and a great deal of interest in the art of quilling.

Strawberry bowl

I really enjoy making these little bowls because they are fast and easy to make. I also enjoy giving them as gifts because people are always amazed that it is just paper and glue. All of my bowls are 2-3" tall which adds to their cuteness.Today I tried a strawberry bowl. The cover comes off to hold a little treat. I think it would be a cute summer picnic decoration.

I started making bowls when I tried the Sunflower kit by Quilled Creations. If you haven't seen it yet check out their website and give it a try. Their kits come with all of the supplies you need and are really easy to follow. Make sure you get the Curling Coach to help hold all the paper in place or you will have a mess on your hands. I added a little ladybug to mine.

I have also made ice cream cups and rose bowls that were special requests from friends. The poinsettia has a bowl attached to the back of the flower. It does not have a top but the bowl is big enough to hold a few holiday treats. The options for these little bowls are only limited by your imagination.

Summer Ladybugs

Bugs are a sure sign of summer. Out of all the bugs that show up outside our house, I prefer ladybugs. My kids also enjoy finding ladybugs and letting them crawl on their hands. They are cute little critters. This one would make a fun embellishment for a card or maybe even party favors for a little girl's birthday. I made this ladybug from 1/4" paper but it could also be made with a narrower 1/8" paper.

Materials: 1/4" red and black quilling paper

Instructions:

• Body- make one loose, off-center circle from 12” of black paper.

• Wings- make two red wings using 6” of red for each wing. Form into loose circle, then pinch into a teardrop shape.

• Head- Using 6” of black, form into a loose circle, then shape into a half circle. Take a 1” piece of black and cut it in half. Curl one end on each piece and glue to the flat part of the head to make antenea so they stand up over the head. Glue the flat part of the head to the black body.

• Glue the wings to the top of the body so the points of the teardrop shapes meet at the back of the head. Using a small hole punch, punch 6 holes from black paper. Glue three to the top of each wing for spots.

• Optional: glue a magnet to the bottom to hang the ladybug on your refrigerator, or glue to a pencil to make a pencil topper.

Camera

Graduation and summer vacation are not too far away and your scrapbooks and photo albums will be filling up with photos. This quilled camera makes a great embellishment to a scrapbook page or why not send grandma your favorite picture in a card. I originally designed this piece for the 2007 Quilling Design A Day calendar by Accord. The calendar is out of print now but occasionally one shows up on ebay.

Supplies: 1/8" gray or black paper, glue

Instructions:

• Camera body it made from 24" loose coil shaped into a rectangle.

• To build out the front of the camera make a 8" loose coil shaped into a square.

• Lens is a 4" loose coil. Glue to front of the camera on top of the large rectangle, then glue the round lens to the top of the camera front.

• Button is a 2" tight roll glued to the top left of the camera.

• Flash is a 0.5" piece of quilling paper folded into a square and glued to the top right of the camera.

• The strap is a 2" piece of quilling paper folded in half, glue the end but keep the center open to look like a loop. Glue the end to the side of the camera.

Time for a Vacation

Summer is right around the corner and this palm tree would make a nice addition to a vacation scrapbook page, summer party invitation, or a bon voyage card. This was another design I made for the 2007 Quilling Design A Day calendar by Accord.

Supplies: 1/8" green and brown paper,glue

Instructions:

• Trunk- using 5" of brown paper, roll into loose coil and pinch corners to make a square. Make 4 squares and glue together as shown.

• Using 3" of brown paper, roll into loose coil and form into a triangle. Glue to the top of the column of squares.

• Leaves- using 12" of green paper, roll into loose coil and shape into a crescent. Make 4 large leaves and glue to the tip of the trunk, two on each side.

• For the two smaller leaves at the top use 8" of green paper, roll into loose coil and shape into a crescent. Glue to the top of the large leaves, one on each side.
